Gary Matthews Jr is going to be a significant loss in the first round for the Halos.
Not only will it be the typical volatile environment in Boston, but John Lackey's career numbers at Fenway are less than desirable. 1-4 in 7 starts. 35 IP, 59 Hits, 29 ER, .362 Avg against, and a 7.46 ERA.
Jeff Francis was 17-9 this year with a 4.22 ERA. Jeff Francis against the Phillies was 0-1 (2 starts), 8.1 IP, 20 H, 14 ER, 5 BB, 6 K, 15.12 ERA. Including 8 earned in 3.1 innings pitching at the Bank on September 13th.
I think betting on Cole would be a good bet, but since I dont want to die at the ripe young age of 23 due to a heart attack I shall stay away.
Yo fellas, I apologize for being an absentee author since the blog went live a few days ago, but I was away for the weekend and have had trouble finding the time and inspiration to hit the ground running with you guys up to this point... but i'll get there.
That being said, I've enjoyed everything I've read so far, with the possible exception of Mojo's Carlos Pena "analysis." The one thing I didn't know was that he was on the yankees at one point, but who really cares, and besides that, we all already knew he had a ridiculous year. And as far as being comeback player of the year... what did he comeback from? He was never particularly good in the first place aside from flashing some talent in Detroit. The guy is only 29, and he gets "comeback" player of the year just for having a great year? Baffling to me... shoulda gone to sheffield or someone like that. Rick Ankiel deserves some type of award as well, although i won't say comeback POY b/c dmitri was 100% deserving.
James: great analysis of the baseball playoff lines, and I am right there with you on most everything, especially the Indians. Scoresandodds, last I checked, has upped that moneylines on both the Sox and Yanks to -180, clearly popularlity inflated... i mean these 4 teams are seperated by 2 games in the standings after all. I have nothing further to add in the AL, in that I love the Indians (with the odds) and I'm lukewarm (like, but no money where my mouth is) on the Angels.
As for the NL, I've heard a lot of gambling enthusiasm about the Phils over the Rockies in this series. I like the Phils to win, but they aren't getting very good odds against the 14-1 Rockies... stay away... especially phils fans... just enjoy the series.
In the cubs-dbacks series, I'm really liking the cubs. The one thing holding my back here is the strong feeling I have about Webb winning game one. Everytime I've had the opportunity to watch Webb this year, he just mows opposing hitters down. When you watch him pitch, its almost as if he's on the mound for 25% of the game his innings go so fast. That being said, the Dbacks have made the shocking decision to use a 4 man rotation in the playoffs. They've got to be kidding. That sets up the Cubs to face Tripe D (Doug Dreadful Davis), Big Fat Livan Hernandez, and Micah Owings (who should be hitting 5th in their lineup everyday instead of starting every 5th day on the hill) in games 2, 3 and 4. The cubs can hit, and the dbacks really can't (check out their Padres-esque lineup) and even if they do down in game 1, this series might not make it back to webb for game 5, especially if the cubs use zambrano (as they should) in game 4 if they are up 2-1. Facing brandon webb in game 5 would obviously be scary, but let's be honest, he's only a sinkerballer, it is possible (just not likely) to put up runs. This series is no layup, but the Cubs have the best odds of all the favorites in the divisional series, so if you're going to take a favorite, make it the cubs.
And Mojo, I forgot to say, I forgive you for the half-hearted effort on the Pena post, since you posted immediately after joining the blog unlike me. I'll just expect better next time. And I'm also depending on you to give us some material outside of the sports world since you're still in college. I mean christ, someone needs to camp out of joe's porch for pete's sake... that would be something i wanna read about.
Speaking of the non-sports world, I've been having some chronic car troubles so I keep having to go to my parents house which gives me the opportunity to watch weeds. Enthralling season through the 5 episodes I've seen. Let me know how everyone feels about openly discussing the show on here. I'm hoping to have showtime soon at our house in bmore, but that all depends on the weasels at comcast. Haven't had a chance to catch the new curb yet, but the season has been slaying me.
South park and baseball playoffs start today/tonight, but i'll be missing it all... im going to a concert... Kings of Leon, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Manchester Orchestra. Tough trade off, but it'll be worth it, plus we have DVR. To make up for it, Thursday night I won a happy hour at this bar where I'll be drinking a top shelf open bar for free (from 9-11) while watching playoff baseball for free. If anyone wants to come down Thursday night and stay the weekend, guests at the happy hour get the same deal for $10.
I have an erection right now...this discussion is great...and Reverend...lay off THE SHOW...it was the first time the kid has ever posted...he will work out the kinks...as will i

If Zambrano wins game 1, the Cubbies sweep

I really enjoyed Jonah Keri's playoff preview on espn.com. Breaks all 4 series down quite insightfully and includes predictions:
